DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCUSSION

Discussion: “Intellectual Acrobatics”- an open debate with workshop elements, devoted to the intersection of New Circus and theatre

Where does circus end and theatre begin? And is that even the right question? For years now, contemporary circus has been stepping out from under the big top - taking to the stage, blending with dance, performance art, and the visual arts. Theatre, in turn, is increasingly turning to the body as its primary storytelling tool. At some point, the boundary ceases to be visible - or ceases to be necessary.

During the debate with workshop elements, together with artists, we will explore what is really happening at the intersection of these two worlds. What is gained when forms blend? What is lost? And who sets the rules in the first place?

Three debates, three topics, one common goal: to think together, but not to sit quietly. The team behind the Festival Newspaper “Tupot,” edited and supervised by PhD Małgorzata Jabłońska, presents events where discussion intertwines with action - workshops, games, and artistic interventions. Performative festival debates are a format that assumes that thinking itself can be an event.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CREATORS

“Tupot” Festival Newspaper - is the pride and joy of the Student Theatre Studies Research Club and holds a special place in the club’s history. Although the publication has faithfully accompanied the Theatre Schools Festival for many years, the editorial team has recently expanded its activities and successfully established new festival partnerships. “Tupot” was initially published exclusively in print, but since 2014 it has also been available in an electronic version in the form of a blog. What can you find in our newspaper? First and foremost, reviews. After each performance we see, we work on a review that is published the next day in print and on the blog. In addition to reviews, on our website you can find interviews, jury verdicts, satirical pieces (since we don’t limit our authors’ expression to a single genre), and other materials related to the festivals where we strive to actively contribute to the theater community.

The University of Łódź Student Theater Studies Research Club / SKNT - is a space for those interested in theatre - from a research, critical, and practical perspective. Since 1977, we have been organizing events, co-creating projects, and publishing the Festival Newspaper “Tupot.” SKNT members actively participate in and organise conferences, discussion meetings, and workshops. All of this is aimed at expanding their knowledge of theatre, promoting the performing arts and related academic disciplines, and gaining practical production experience.

PhD Małgorzata Jabłońska - a theatre scholar to the very core, though she has occasionally broken bones during theatre workshops. She specialises in the history and methodology of acting training and is a fanatical devotee of Meyerhold. She works to promote a culture of informed consent and prevention of violence and discrimination in the theatre, co-founding the Programme Council of the Academy of Safe Culture at the Theatre Academy. She is a founding member of the CHOREA Theatre Association and co-author of the handbook “Actors Physical Training: From Individual to Group Actions” (2015). She is active in the Polish Society for Theatre Research, the National Theater OFFensywa, and the International Platform for Performer Training.
