DESCRIPTION OF THE CONCERT

Concert “Odyssey” is the Communal Choir’s second musical project. The concert draws inspiration from the work of the Austrian composer of Greek origin, Anestis Logothetis, his innovative method of notating compositions, and the Odyssey - the fundamental idea of journeying and wandering, here in pursuit of sound.

The ensemble takes the audience on a journey through musical traditions from different parts of the world. Here, contemporary arrangements of ancient Greek music intertwine with pieces derived from other European cultures. It is a vocal narrative about a journey, about the search for goodness and harmony in a world full of chaos, told through many voices and languages.

The project is the result of several months’ work by the ensemble in searching for new means of vocal and physical expression, integrated with sound and word. It is also a further step towards exploring and defining the choir’s unique artistic identity.

The clash of contemporary compositions and modern performance tools with the oldest examples of musical notation, forms the basis of “The Odyssey”, performed by a 30-strong choir, under the baton of the distinguished conductor and musician Grzegorz Wierus.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Com­mu­nal Cho­ir - was es­ta­bli­shed in 2024 as part of the Prze­strze­nie Sztu­ki Łódź - Te­atr pro­gram­me. The gro­up con­si­sts of both expe­rien­ced sin­gers and pe­ople ta­king the­ir first steps in gro­up choral sin­ging. The cho­ir not only has an ar­ti­stic func­tion, but, abo­ve all, an edu­ca­tio­nal and so­cial one - it con­nects pe­ople thro­ugh sin­ging to­ge­ther, and cre­ates a safe and cre­ati­ve spa­ce for de­ve­lop­ment and co­ope­ra­tion. In 2025, during the 14th Retroperspektywy International Theatre Festival, the Cooperative Choir gave the premiere of its first concert, “Hoson Zes / Shine” - based on contemporary arrangements of ancient Greek music. The concert was also presented at the 18th Boska Komedia International Theatre Festival in Kraków, at the 34th Klamra Alternative Theatre Meetings in Toruń, and at the 6th Off Rzeszów Festival. The con­certs by the Com­mu­nal Cho­ir are a ma­ni­fe­sta­tion of com­mu­ni­ty, open­ness and the strength that co­mes from be­ing to­ge­ther in mu­sic.

Grze­gorz Wie­rus - con­duc­tor, te­acher, po­pu­la­ri­zer of mu­si­cal cul­tu­re. He re­gu­lar­ly col­la­bo­ra­tes with the Sta­ni­sław Mo­niusz­ko Grand The­atre in Po­znań. At the Po­znań Ope­ra he con­duc­ted a num­ber of sta­ge pre­mie­res and world pre­mie­res. He col­la­bo­ra­tes with many in­sti­tu­tions, e.g. Sin­fo­nia Var­so­via, Łódź Phil­har­mo­nic, Kra­ków Phil­har­mo­nic, Po­lish Cham­ber Phil­har­mo­nic in So­pot, Sze­ged Sym­pho­ny Or­che­stra, Sta­ra Za­go­ra Sta­te Ope­ra, Mo­ra­vian Phil­har­mo­nic in Olo­mo­uc, Beetho­ven Aca­de­my Or­che­stra, Zie­lo­na Góra Phil­har­mo­nic, Su­dec­ka Phil­har­mo­nic in Wał­brzych, En­sem­ble No­stri Tem­po­ris (Kyiv, Ukra­ine). Sin­ce 2012 he has been the con­duc­tor of the Sym­pho­ny Or­che­stra of the Sta­ni­sław Mo­niusz­ko Com­plex of Mu­si­cal Scho­ols in Łódź. Wie­rus is par­ti­cu­lar­ly de­vo­ted to pro­mo­ting mu­si­cal cul­tu­re. He con­ducts nu­me­ro­us fa­mi­ly con­certs and mu­sic work­shops and edu­ca­tio­nal events, e.g. “Chór dla (nie)opor­nych (Choir for the (non)Resilient)” (Łódź Phil­har­mo­nic), “Chór Dzia­dów i Bab (Grandads and Grandmas Choir)”, “Za­mi­gaj Mo­niusz­kę” (Sta­ni­sław Mo­niusz­ko Grand The­atre in Po­znań). Sin­ce 2023, he has been ac­ti­ve­ly in­vo­lved in the ac­ti­vi­ties of the EU­FO­RIS Ar­ti­sts As­so­cia­tion.

Eli­na To­ne­va - born in So­fia (Bul­ga­ria) ac­tress, vo­ca­list, sin­ger, per­for­mer, the­atre in­struc­tor at CHO­REA The­atre. Gra­du­ated from Gra­phic De­sign Fa­cul­ty in the Aca­de­my of Fine Arts in Łódź. Lec­tu­rer of sta­ge mo­ve­ment tech­ni­qu­es, sin­ging and body awa­re­ness at the Film Scho­ol in Łódź. Long-time in­struc­tor of Krav Maga - Isra­eli self-de­fen­se and com­bat sys­tem and tra­ining expert of mar­tial arts, com­bat and self-de­fen­se sys­tems. She also de­als with ar­ti­stic and uti­li­ty ce­ra­mics. In­struc­tor of tra­di­tio­nal Bal­kan vo­cal and dan­ce tech­ni­qu­es. One of the fo­un­ders of “An­cient Or­che­stra” - a mu­si­cal pro­ject at the Cen­tre of The­atre Prac­ti­ces “Gar­dzie­ni­ce” in 2001 (a mu­si­cal and re­se­arch pro­ject by To­masz Ro­do­wicz and Ma­ciej Ry­chły, which was a cre­ati­ve re­con­struc­tion of the mu­sic of An­cient Gre­ece). Mem­ber of CHO­REA The­atre As­so­cia­tion sin­ce 2004. Sin­ce the be­gin­ning of CHO­REA The­atre, she has been a co-cre­ator and per­for­mer of mu­sic in most of the the­atre's per­for­man­ces and mu­si­cal pro­jects. She is one of the le­aders of the gro­up's edu­ca­tio­nal and work­shop pro­gram­mes. Expe­rien­ced in le­ading phy­si­cal, vo­cal, and dan­ce work­shops for ac­tors, mu­si­cians, dan­cers and the­atre in­struc­tors all over the world as a the­atre work­shop le­ader and phy­si­cal the­atre tra­ining spe­cia­list. Her work­shops are po­pu­lar, thanks to her exten­si­ve te­aching expe­rien­ce, pro­fes­sio­nal com­bi­na­tion of ele­ments of phy­si­cal mo­ve­ment, exer­ci­ses and rhy­th­mic ga­mes, and de­man­ding tra­di­tio­nal songs.

Tomasz Rodowicz - Artistic Director of CHOREA Theatre. An actor, director, musician, teacher, educator, theatre instructor, university lecturer, earlier also a historian of philosophy, and bee-keeper. Born in 1951 in Warsaw. A graduate of the Department of History of Philosophy at the Warsaw Theological Academy. A co-founder of the first social therapy centre for the young addicts in Poland. He has cooperated with Jerzy Grotowski and Teatr Laboratorium between 1974-1979 on the para-theatrical initiatives. The co-founder and key actor of the Centre for Theatre Practices "Gardzienice", its member and the leader of educational programmes between the years 1977-2003. The co-founder of CHOREA Theatre Association and its leader since 2004. The artistic director of Fabryka Sztuki in Łódź since 2007. The artistic director of International Theatre Festival Retroperspektywy and the Nationwide Theatre Festival Perspektywy. The lecturer at the following universities: the University of Łódź, AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow (Bytom branch), and The Leon Schiller National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź. The leader of multiple international educational, didactic, artistic projects and research expeditions for actors, theatre coaches and culture animators from around the world. Innovative musical and physical training expert and theatre workshop specialist. Worldwide authority in leading workshops for actors, dancers, singers, musicians, theatre instructors and culture animators. Author of a handbook "Actors physical training. From individual to group actions". In 2014 he was awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture - Gloria Artis by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Received "O!2017" award in the “Theatre” category by O.pl Polski Portal Kultury. In 2018 he was awarded by the Mayor of the City of Łódź in recognition of his artistic achievements, culture protection and popularisation. In 2019 he received a Zygmunt Hübner “THEATRE FIGURE” award, established by Fundacja Teatru Myśli Obywatelskiej im. Zygmunta Hübnera - this way becoming part of distinguished laureates such as: Anna Augustynowicz, Jan Englert, Jerzy Trela, Piotr Cieplak and Jacek Głomb.
